In this talk polyelectrolyte gels will be presented which offer many applications, such as super absorbers in baby diapers, viscosity modifiers in food industry, soft contact lenses, and they can also be used as desalination agents. After a short overview of what polyelectrolytes are, one should discuss how one can model them with coarse-grained MD, and what kind of theories exist to describe their swelling. After a discussion of a suitable theory a theoretical mode for discussing the efficiency of desalination in practical applications will be presented.
